Summa Theologiae, 1475
This copy of Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae was printed in Venice in 1475 by Franz Renner of Heilbronn and a printer known only as Nicholas of Frankfurt. They set up shop in Venice at some point in the early 1470s, joining a growing group fo itinerant foreign printers in the city.
This book retains a contemporary calfskin binding and is somewhat unusual in that all of its initials have been painted in (the initial spaces were frequently left blank). The beginning of the book is marked by an elaborate initial P with a portrait of Thomas Aquinas in the bow.
There are contemporary annotations throughout the texts but no other indications of who owned the book.
